Aftermath

The snow has finally gone so I went out to survey the damage.  Many things are done.  The mizuna, chard, and lettuce that were uncovered did not survive, but the kale looks o.k.

 It looks like the spinach may be o.k, but not the tatsoi.

I think the winter broccoli will make it, as well as the parsnips, although the tops look bad.

The biggest surprise is the bed I covered.  I had expected the mache to survive, but the leaf lettuce looks pretty good, too.

Snow

Today we had about an inch of snow.  But the cover over the lettuce is still standing.  I haven't looked inside yet.  But tonight we're expected to go down to 12 degrees, and 7 tomorrow night, so I'm assuming the lettuce will be mush.

So far the citrus trees have been hanging in there, but I think 12 degrees is too much to ask.  So we moved them into the garage for a while.

We had one of the pipes to the drip system burst.  I'm not sure why, because we did drain the lines (we thought).  Obviously, something went wrong.  Let's hope it's the only one that breaks.

We've had tons of birds, mostly juncos.  I filled the feeder this morning, and it was almost emptied by evening.   They're also out poking around in the yard.

Tiny footprints:

We've had one Anna's hummingbird sitting by the feeder all day.  I'm not sure if she's guarding it or just finding shelter.

Cold Coming

With the forecast of very cold weather in the next few days, I decided I'd better cover the bed of lettuce to see if it will survive.

I also dug another row of carrots and put them in a bucket in the garage, along with a few parsnips.   The carrots are a nice size, the parsnips are huge.
